One World Play Project
Q: What is One World Play Project?
A: One World Play Project makes, sells and distributes products and services to enable play around the world, especially for those living in the harshest environments where play is nearly non-existent. One World Play Project is a B-Corporation, harnessing the power of business for social good. Collaborating with sponsors, organizations and individuals, we work to bring the transformative power of play to disadvantaged communities where play and sport are used to impact and empower youth and their communities.
Q: Why did One World Futbol Project become One World Play Project?
A: Our company expanded its focus to become One World Play Project on November 21, 2014. What started with an inspiration—to help youth living in the toughest conditions play to their hearts’ content through an ultra-durable soccer ball—has grown into a mission to support, enable and expand the transformative power of play in all its forms—anywhere and everywhere.
Q: What is the mission of One World Play Project?
A: The mission of One World Play Project is to support, enable and expand the transformative power of play in all its forms—anywhere and everywhere.
Q: How can I get involved with One World Play Project?
A: There are a number of ways you can get involved! Purchase a ball, buy merchandise, become a sponsor, start a campaign, support one of our growing network of partner organizations, share your story, tell your friends, family and colleagues about One World Play Project on your social networks (such as Facebook and Twitter) and more. We’d love to hear from you!
Why a Ball?
Q: Why a ball? Why is a ball important?
A: Our journey at One World Play Project started with a simple concept: A ball—the One World Futbol. One World Play Project founder Tim Jahnigen was inspired to create an ultra-durable ball after watching news footage of kids in Darfur playing a soccer game using a ball of trash tied up with twine. At that moment, he realized that these children deserved better and that he could develop a ball that could withstand the harsh conditions faced by youth living in refugee camps, disaster areas and other disadvantaged communities.
For decades, UNICEF, the U.N. Refugee Agency, as well as private non-profit organizations working in war zones, refugee camps and impoverished communities throughout the world, have observed children finding their own ways to play games, especially soccer, with rag balls, cans, and rocks. For these youth, play is an important part of healing, recovery and healthy development. Many organizations use sport and play to teach life skills and empower youth living in disadvantaged communities. Through the ball and our sponsors, global network of partner organizations, and individuals, One World Play Project has impacted more than 45 million children worldwide.
Q: Why is play important for children?
A: Research has shown that play is critical to the healthy physical, social and emotional development of children–especially those living in disadvantaged communities. We believe play is a need as important as food, water, shelter and medicine. Play enables hope, optimism and opportunity. One World Play Project is focused on making a positive impact by bringing the transformative power of play to kids around the world.
Q: One World Play Project is a B Corporation. What is a B Corporation?
A: B Corporations use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. B Corporations are structured in many different ways, but they all operate on the basis of what is called the Triple Bottom Line. This means we balance the interests of People, Planet, and Profit. Specifically, One World Play Project is designed to make a profit but not at the expense of the people who work for it, the communities where we operate or the natural environment. To become certified as a B Corporation, One World Play Project had to pass a difficult and very detailed test to prove that it benefits people and helps the environment.
Q: What is Buy & Give? What are you doing differently from Buy One, Give One?
A: Buy & Give is an expansion of our “Buy One, Give One” model—designed to impact more youth with the transformative power of play. Buy & Give supports both ball-raising campaigns and play projects to fund other play-related activities and programs.
Q: Why did One World Play Project expand its giving model?
A: Play comes in many forms—often going beyond a ball, and different programs require different resources to enable play. Our partner organizations on the ground asked for our help in supporting additional play opportunities. We listened and as a result are extending our giving options to help fund these play programs and impact even more children through play.
Q: Can anyone give a ball without buying one for themselves?
A: Yes. When you purchase a ball, you have the option, through our Give Balls program to designate that both balls be donated. You may also add additional balls if you choose.
Q: How do we decide where donated balls go?
A: The One World Futbols are distributed by our growing global network of partner organizations working with youth in disadvantaged communities throughout the world.
Q: Will the ball be available in stores? If so, where and when?
A: Currently, the One World Futbol is only available for sale online at our website, oneworldplayproject.com, through the Buy One, Give One program. One World Play Project also sells the One World Futbol in TOMS Marketplace as well as directly to institutions, companies and non-profit organizations that distribute balls to disadvantaged communities around the world, such as refugee camps, conflict zones, disaster areas and inner cities. Please sign up on our Facebook page for updates, follow us on Twitter and Instagram and check our website periodically to learn the latest on One World Play Project. You can also see the impact of the power of play in our Impact Videos and by reading our Impact Stories.
Q: What is the warranty on the ball?
A: We guarantee satisfaction. You may return your ball within 30 days of purchase for a replacement ball or your money back. If, within one year of purchase, your One World Futbol becomes unplayable in the course of normal wear and tear in recreational use by people, we will replace the ball. Please email us with photos of the damaged ball with a description of the damage, the terrain on which it was used and the act that caused the damage, if any.
One World Futbols are sometime purchased as toys for pets, but the futbols were not designed for animal play. We recommend supervised play and we cannot replace a ball damaged by a pet.
Q: What happens if I return a ball? Is the donated ball also returned?
A: You may return your ball within 30 days for an immediate replacement or get your money back. A ball will still be donated even if yours is later returned. We would never take a ball away from a community need! See our returns and exchanges policy.
The One World Futbol
Q: What is the One World Futbol made of?
A: The One World Futbol is made from unique (proprietary) cross-linked closed cell foam that enables the ball to withstand harsh environments without wearing out.
Q: How are One World Futbols manufactured?
A: The One World Futbol uses proprietary designs, engineering, materials and processes. Though made through a form of injection molding, the machines are highly-specialized and require stabilized infrastructure and technical support.
Q: Is the One World Futbol suitable for use by pets?
A: The One World Futbol was designed for play by humans. Although many customers have used the ball as a pet toy and teeth punctures do not damage it, it can be chewed apart by a determined animal. If you allow your pet to play with the ball, we recommend that you supervise the play to prevent irreparable damage to the ball and to prevent your animal from swallowing a piece of the ball.
Q: Can the One World Futbol be flattened for easier shipment?
A: The One World Futbol is not actually inflated and, therefore, cannot be deflated. Flattening the ball for any period of time is not recommended since it may become misshapen. We recommend that the balls be shipped in their box or transported in bulk in large duffel bags.
Q: What is the weight and dimensions of the One World Futbol?
A: The youth size 4 One World Futbol weighs 12oz/342g and is 8 1/4 inches/204 mm in diameter. The adult size 5 One World Futbol weighs 15oz/426g and is 8 and 3/4 inches/221mm in diameter.
Q: Why is there a price difference from the original blue One World Futbol and the colored One World Futbols?
A: While the new colors require additional pigment — adding a slightly higher cost to manufacture — we believe consumers are willing to pay a premium as these more visible “pop” color One World Futbols help enable longer-lasting play. By offering the ultra-durable One World Futbol in a variety of colors, we can further engage and empower our partners, supporters and fans to advance our mission of bringing the transformative power of play to those who need it most.
Q: What is a One World Play Project campaign?
A: Campaigns are a way for teams, organizations and others to raise One World Futbols. By establishing a campaign with us, you create a page within our website where family, friends and others can purchase One World Futbols (via our Buy One, Give One and Give Balls programs). Through your campaign, you can designate an organization, school or the like to be the recipient of the donated balls or you can allow One World Play Project to choose.
If supporters are interested in purchasing a One World Futbol for themselves and also giving a ball to your recipient organization, they would shop the Buy One, Give One option. If they simply want to donate One World Futbols to your cause, they would select the Give Balls ($25 U.S.) option.
Q: Where can I donate the One World Futbols generated through my campaign?
A: Donate to one of our partner organizations: if you would like One World Play Project to choose, we will distribute the One World Futbols generated through the campaign to an organization working with children and youth in disadvantaged communities.
Donate locally (in the contiguous U.S. or Europe): if you want to donate the One World Futbols to an organization in the contiguous U.S. or Europe, One World Play Project will cover the cost of shipping the donated One World Futbols to one address in the contiguous U.S. or Europe. You will be responsible for the logistics of delivery.
Donate internationally: if you want to donate the One World Futbols to an organization outside the contiguous U.S. or Europe, One World Play Project will cover the cost of shipping the donated One World Futbols to one address in the contiguous U.S. or Europe. From there, you will be responsible for the cost of international shipping and the logistics of delivery.
Q: Can I sell One World Futbols at my tournament or event?
A: We cannot ship One World Futbols to be sold at physical events, tournaments and so on, but we can provide you with a PDF to print our brochure to share at events and tournaments. Email email@example.com to request materials.
Q: Can I use the One World Play Project logo to promote my campaign at tournaments, events and other gatherings?
A: We do not have signage to loan for events/promotions, but you may create signage using the One World Play Project logo to fit your specifications/needs. We do require that our team reviews and approves all collateral that incorporates the One World Play Project logo. For use of our logo, email firstname.lastname@example.org. We’re excited that you want to share the One World Play Project mission and story!
Q: Can I do PR and social media around my campaign?
Q: Can I select a specific ball color for my campaign? Will all donated balls be the same color?
A: Through your campaign, you can sell blue, green, pink and/or orange One World Futbols. For purchases made through the Buy One, Give One program, supporters can select the color they want for the “Buy One” side. All balls raised through the campaign for the recipient organization will be blue One World Futbols — e.g., the second ball triggered by the Buy One, Give One option as well as balls generated through the Give Balls option will all be blue.
Q: How do I start a campaign with One World Play Project?
A: It’s easy! Start by filling out the Campaign Application.
Q: How does One World Play Project define play?
A: The definition of play is most likely different for all of us based on who we are, where we grew up and what we’ve experienced. But if we focus on the essence of play, how we engage in acts of play and how they make us feel, we can likely find some common ground.
What we do know is that play is an intrinsic part of our lives, regardless of geography or culture. It enables children—and adults—to thrive and reach their full potential. Play and sport play a critical role in the healthy physical, emotional and psychological development of children*. Play helps children adapt to their environment and learn skills enabling them to survive and succeed**. Through play we become stronger individuals, build better communities and create a more positive future.

Q: What is a “play project”?
A: Play projects are programs and initiatives in need of specific resources to enable play for youth living in areas where play is scarce or non-existent.
Q: What type of play projects can I support?
A: Through our new Buy & Give option, you will be able to contribute to four categories of play projects:
- Equipment: provides tools (e.g. balls, footwear, rackets, uniforms)
- Infrastructure: funds areas and facilities (e.g. playgrounds, fields, courts, lighting)
- Programming: supports programs with specific focus (e.g. health awareness, life skills)
- Post-Emergency Relief Assistance: aids programs that utilize play as part of relief efforts following an emergency (e.g. natural disaster, violent conflict or humanitarian crisis)
Q: Who can support play projects?
A: The opportunity to support play projects is currently offered to those who shop our Play Shop in North and South America. However, regardless of your location, you can give One World Futbols to campaigns.
Q: How many play projects does One World Play Project run at a time?
A: We currently have three different projects running at any given time.
Q: How did One World Play Project pick these play projects?
A: We select projects that will have a broad impact on their organization and community, implemented by partners that are in need of the resources specified. All of our partners and play projects go through a detailed evaluation and review process to ensure that funds are used as intended.
Selection criteria for play projects include: project impact, project type, partner profile, alternative funding availability and geographical representation.
Q: How can an organization apply to receive funding for play projects?
A: Currently, we are focused on funding projects from our existing partner network (of more than 50,000 individual organizations). In the future, we may consider opening play project opportunities to new partners as well.
Q: Is there a limit to the amount you will fund for a play project? What are the criteria you use to determine funding?
A: We choose projects that are not only within our ability to fund but can also make a real impact with the funding they are given. So, the amount we will fund for a play project depends on the project’s needs. We believe we can make a greater impact by providing full-funding for a smaller project, rather than partial-funding of a larger project that may not have other sources of funding.
Q: How often do you change active play project options?
A: Play projects remain active until they are funded. As play projects are funded, new play projects will be introduced.
Q: What percentage of One World Play Project proceeds goes to play projects?
Q: Can I still give a ball or only fund play projects? How much are you giving per ball?
A: We are continuing the Buy One, Give One program within our expanded Buy & Give model. When a ball is purchased, individuals now have the option to donate a second ball to a campaign or direct their support to a play project that funds other play activities. Play projects allow people to support other play-related projects in addition to programs that need One World Futbols.
Q: How can I help support a play project?
A: Individuals can purchase One World Futbols and choose to support one of our featured play projects. They can also purchase new company-branded merchandise, posters and postcards which also support play projects.
Q: Will I know exactly where my money is going?
A: Once an order is placed, you have the option to choose which play project you would like to give to. Each play project page provides a detailed description of what is being funded. For more information about our current play projects, please visit oneworldplayproject.com/giving/play-projects/
Campaigns v. Play Projects
Q: What happens to ball-raising campaigns? What happens to my campaign?
A: The Campaigns Program is still included in the Buy & Give model and remains Buy One, Give One and Give Balls—for every ball purchased, an additional One World Futbol is given to the campaign. Individuals can also continue to just give One World Futbols through the Give Balls option.
Q: Can I still give One World Futbols to programs that need balls?
Q: Why did One World Play Project decide to sell company-branded merchandise?
A: Over the years, many of our supporters have asked about One World Play Project apparel and accessories. We heard your requests and created One World Play Project merchandise! Now you can buy cool new accessories and at the same time support play projects. Through our newly expanded Buy & Give model, individuals can purchase merchandise and have a portion of the proceeds go to an active play project of their choice.
Q: If I buy a merchandise item, will that same item be donated?
A: No. When you purchases a merchandise item, you can select an active play project to receive a portion of the proceeds.
Q: Why can’t I give a ball if I bought merchandise?
A: Currently, individuals can only give One World Futbols by purchasing balls through the Buy One, Give One model and choosing a campaign to give to. If an individual doesn’t need a ball for themselves, they can also choose the Give Balls option and give balls to one of the One World Play Project campaigns.
