Frequently Asked Questions

One World Play Project

Q: What is One World Play Project?

A: One World Play Project makes, sells and distributes products and services to enable play around the world, especially for those living in the harshest environments where play is nearly non-existent. One World Play Project is a B-Corporation, harnessing the power of business to ignite social change. Collaborating with sponsors, organizations and individuals, we work to bring the transformative power of play to disadvantaged communities where play and sport are used to impact and empower youth and their communities.

Q: Why did One World Futbol Project become One World Play Project?

A: Our company expanded its focus to become One World Play Project on November 21, 2014. What started with an inspiration—to help youth living in the toughest conditions play to their hearts’ content through an ultra-durable soccer ball—has grown into a mission to support, enable and expand the transformative power of play in all its forms—anywhere and everywhere.

Q: Who started One World Play Project and why?

A: One World Play Project was founded in 2010 by Tim Jahnigen and Lisa Tarver. One World Futbol inventor Tim Jahnigen was inspired to create the ball after watching news footage of kids in Darfur playing a soccer game using a ball of trash tied up with twine. At that moment, Tim realized there was a global need for a nearly indestructible ball that could withstand the harsh conditions faced by youth living in refugee camps, disaster areas and other disadvantaged communities. He set out to design a ball that played like a “real futbol,” but would never wear out, never go flat, never need a pump.

Tim’s idea remained in the concept stage until a chance conversation with world-renowned entertainer Sting. Once Tim shared his vision of a nearly indestructible ball, Sting immediately provided the support needed to do the research and development. In recognition of Sting’s crucial, early involvement, the name of the ball and of the company are based on the song “One World (Not Three),” written by Sting. Sting continues to be an advocate for and supporter of One World Play Project. Additional information is available on the Media Center and the Company Background page.

Q: What is the mission of One World Play Project?

A: The mission of One World Play Project is to support, enable and expand the transformative power of play in all its forms—anywhere and everywhere.

Q: What is the goal of One World Play Project?

A: Our goal is to bring the transformative power of play to youth in disadvantaged communities.

Q: How does One World Play Project work?

A: One World Play Project sells the One World Futbol directly to institutions, companies and non-profit organizations, as well as to individual consumers through a Buy One, Give One model. For every ball bought by individuals at retail, the company donates a second ball to organizations working with children and youth in disadvantaged communities around the world. One World Play Project distributes balls through a growing global network of organizations serving youth in harsh environments around the world, including refugee camps, conflict zones, disaster areas, inner cities and other disadvantaged communities.

Q: What is Sting’s connection to One World Play Project?

A:  Sting provided the initial funding for the research and development of a prototype of the One World Futbol. In recognition of Sting’s crucial, early involvement, the name of the ball and of the company are based on the song “One World (Not Three),” written by Sting. Sting continues to be an advocate for and supporter of One World Play Project.

Q: How can I get involved with One World Play Project?

A: There are a number of ways you can get involved! Purchase a ball, start a campaign, support one of our growing network of partner organizations, share your story, tell your friends, family and colleagues about One World Play Project on your social networks (such as Facebook and Twitter) and more. We’d love to hear from you!

Why a Ball?

Q: Why a ball? Why is a ball important?

A: For decades, UNICEF, the U.N. Refugee Agency, as well as private non-profit organizations working in war zones, refugee camps and impoverished communities throughout the world, have observed children finding their own ways to play games, especially soccer, with rag balls, cans, and rocks. One World Play Project assists the work of a growing global network of organizations and brightens the lives of millions of children through the One World Futbol.

Q: Why are play and soccer important to kids?

A: Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. For many kids in refugee camps, war zones, disaster areas and inner cities, soccer provides not just a positive escape but teaches teamwork and conflict resolution. We know first-hand how important play is to children and believe every child should play, deserves to play and should have the opportunity to do so. We also know that when play is missing other opportunities for healthy development disappear as a result. One World Play Project is focused on making a positive impact by bringing the joy of soccer—and play—to kids around the world.

Q: We noticed that One World Play Project is a B Corporation. What is a B Corporation?

A: B Corporations are a new type of company which use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. To become certified as a B Corporation, One World Play Project had to pass a difficult and very detailed test to prove that it benefits people and helps the environment.

Q: How is a B Corp structured? Why is this?

A: B Corporations are structured in many different ways, but they all operate on the basis of what is called the Triple Bottom Line. This means we balance the interests of People, Planet, and Profit. Specifically, One World Play Project is designed to make a profit but not at the expense of the people who work for it, the communities where we operate or the natural environment.

Q: Why operate as a B Corp?

A: One World Play Project, like other Certified B Corporations, is a mission-driven business. We set up the Company for the purpose of distributing millions of One World Futbols to children who live in very challenging surroundings, such as war zones, refugee camps, isolated villages, disaster areas and inner-city neighborhoods. As a B Corporation, we’re able to keep the business going by making a profit but still fulfill this mission. And, it doesn’t hurt that more and more consumers are buying from companies like ours that pursue the Triple Bottom Line. By supporting B Corps like One World Play Project, you’re supporting a better way to do business.

Q: How does the Buy One, Give One work?

A: You may return your ball within 30 days for an immediate replacement or get your money back. A ball will still be donated even if yours is later returned. We would never take a ball away from a community need! See our returns and exchanges policy.

The One World Futbol

Q: What makes this ball ultra-durable? What’s it made of?

A: The One World Futbol is made from unique (proprietary) cross-linked closed cell foam that enables the ball to withstand harsh environments without wearing out.

Q: Tell me about the materials you chose?

A: The material was chosen because it is inert (non-toxic, doesn’t leach) and for its practical flexibility and durability. By replacing lots of soccer balls that constantly become punctured or deflated, the One World Futbol helps greatly reduce waste. The One World Futbol is designed to last for years, even decades, saving significant amounts of money in replacement costs.

Q: What is the process involved in making the ball?

A: The One World Futbol uses proprietary designs, engineering, materials and processes. Though made through a form of injection molding, the machines are highly-specialized and require stabilized infrastructure and technical support.

Q: Where is the ball manufactured?

A: The ball is manufactured in Taiwan.

Q: Why don’t you make the balls in other markets?

A: Currently, Taiwan is our only manufacturing location — though not for the simplistic reasons most think of, which is usually a pricing consideration. We’ve pushed the known boundaries of the ball’s technology past most theoretical limitations of industry standards. Based on demand and the availability of manufacturing partners with sufficient assets and skill sets, we will gladly make our technology-intensive product in multiple locations and/or regions. But right now, the Taiwan location is the only manufacturing facility that has those skills and assets.

Q: Why do you call it a “futbol”?

A: Soccer is the world’s most popular sport by far, but it’s called “soccer” only in the United States. In English-speaking countries, soccer is called “football.” In many other countries, it’s called “futbol.”

Q: You say that it’s a “ultra-durable” soccer ball. What proof do you have to back up this claim?

A: Unlike any other soccer ball on the market, it requires no pump or needle and will never go flat, even if punctured. The One World Futbol is not affected by continued use in harsh environments. You can even kick a One World Futbol into a barbed-wire or razor-wire fence, and it won’t deflate or go flat! We know. We’ve tried.

Q: How does this ball compare to a standard soccer ball in terms of durability and play?

A: The One World Futbol is an ultra-durable, all-terrain ball. The ball is ideal for recreational play and practice. It is not designed for or intended to replace game balls for competition-level league or team play.

Whether for beach soccer, street soccer, play in your own backyard or for use on the roughest terrain anywhere around the world, the One World Futbol will last for years. The One World Futbol can be played with on any surface, anywhere—not just grass or turf soccer fields. Unlike other sports balls, the surface of the One World Futbol won’t wear off no matter how abrasive the playing area. The ball requires no pump or needle and will never go flat, even if punctured.

The One World Futbol was designed with a lower bounce for use on harder surfaces, such as streets, roads, schoolyards, dirt lots, etc. It’s the ideal ball for recreational play on any rough surface, but of course, you can also use it on grass and turf.

The One World Futbol is ultra-durable, making it ideal for kicking around on all surfaces, including indoor floors and artificial turf, grass, concrete, blacktop, sand, dirt, gravel and rocks.

The traditional soccer ball can be easily punctured or ruptured. It requires frequent inflation with a pump and needle, which are easily broken or lost. And every standard soccer ball will be scraped and gouged by contact with rough surfaces. As a result, the phenomenon and waste of deflated soccer balls is a common sight in the backyards of families with soccer players at home. The short lifespan of traditional balls, and the expense of replacing them, means young people in disadvantaged communities are often left to play soccer with rocks, cans or “rag balls” made from trash, plastic bags and string.

Q: We know that the One World Futbol was unveiled during the 2010 World Cup was blue. Why?

A: The shade of blue we selected for the debut of the One World Futbol is associated with peace-making efforts in general and the United Nations in particular.

Q: Does the ball come in different sizes?

A: Currently, the One World Futbol comes in an adult size 5 and a youth size 4.

Q: What are the weights and dimensions of the One World Futbol?

A: The youth size 4 One World Futbol weighs 12oz/342g and is 8 1/4 inches/204 mm in diameter. The adult size 5 One World Futbol weighs 15oz/426g and is 8 and 3/4 inches/221mm in diameter.

The Pop Color One World Futbols

Q: Why did you decide to make additional colors?

A: Play doesn’t stop when the sun goes down, so we wanted to expand our offering of ultra-durable balls with a range of new high-visibility colors that enable play longer into the evening hours. We are committed to delivering innovative products and services that support our mission to bring the transformative power of play to people everywhere. We are committed to continually deliver color innovation and inspiration to help our partners, supporters and fans advance our mission and introduced the green, pink and orange balls with this in mind. We also work to develop products that meet consumer color demand.

Q: How did you choose the additional colors?

A: Play doesn’t stop when the sun goes down, so we wanted to offer our ultra-durable ball in a variety of high-visibility colors that will help ensure longer play. For the orange and the green One World Futbols, we referenced traditional fluorescent “safety” colors during our design process. For the pink ball, we have long wanted to include this color option as a complement to our original blue One World Futbol as it is of similar intensity. We strive to offer products that will support our mission to bring the power of play to children and youth worldwide. We also work to develop products that meet consumer color demand.

Q: Do these colors also come in different sizes?

A: Currently, all One World Futbols come in adult size 5 and youth size 4.

Q: How many colors of One World Futbols are there?

A: There are five colors available for purchase: blue, green, pink, orange and the Chevrolet-sponsored gold One World Futbol. For information about becoming a sponsor, including custom-ball as well as co-branding options, email sponsorships@oneworldplayproject.com.

Q: What is unique about these colors?

A: Play doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. By creating our ultra-durable ball in a variety of more visible colors, we hope to ensure longer-lasting play.

Q: Are these colors the same weight and dimension as the original One World Futbol?

A: The green, pink and orange balls are the same weight and dimension as the original blue One World Futbol. The youth size 4 One World Futbol weighs 12oz/342g and is 8 1/4 inches/204 mm in diameter. The adult size 5 One World Futbol weighs 15oz/426g and is 8 3/4 inches/221mm in diameter.

Q: Are they made of the same material?

A: All One World Futbols are made from unique (proprietary) cross-linked closed cell foam that enables the ball to withstand harsh environments without wearing out.

Q: Are there any new materials included in these colors worth noting?

A: While there are no new materials included, it is important to point out that the high-visibility colors allow play to continue longer.

Q: How do these colors hold up in harsh environments?

A: Like the original blue One World Futbol and the Chevrolet-sponsored gold One World Futbol, the brightly colored additions are ultra-durable — they never need a pump and never go flat, even when punctured.

Q: Will these colors fade?

A: Eventually, yes, any color will fade; however, what’s important is that unlike a traditional soccer ball, the One World Futbol can survive the harshest environments. The One World Futbol is an ultra-durable ball that allows play to continue longer. A single One World Futbol can outlast hundreds of regular balls, eliminating the waste of discarded, punctured soccer balls.

Q: Why is there a price difference from the original blue One World Futbol?

A: While the new colors require additional pigment — adding a slightly higher cost to manufacture — we believe consumers are willing to pay a premium as these more visible “pop” color One World Futbols help enable longer-lasting play. By offering the ultra-durable One World Futbol in a variety of colors, we can further engage and empower our partners, supporters and fans to advance our mission of bringing the transformative power of play to those who need it most.

Q: For Buy One, Give One and Give Balls, what color balls will the recipient organization receive?

A: For every One World Futbol you buy, we give a second blue One World Futbol to youth through organizations working in disadvantaged communities, such as refugee camps, war zones, disaster areas and inner cities. If you don’t need a ball for yourself, you can buy One World Futbols through our “Give Balls” program and we will give a blue One World Futbol directly to organizations working with youth in disadvantaged communities, such as refugee camps, war zones, disaster areas and inner cities.

Q: Can I purchase the new colors at the bulk rate?

A: Yes.

Q: Will you be introducing more new colors? If so, when?

A: We will continue to introduce new colors as well as products that support our mission to bring the transformative power of play to communities. Our current plan is to introduce new colors in other geographies in 2015.

Campaigns

Q: What is a One World Play Project campaign, and how does it work?

A: Campaigns are a way for teams, organizations and others to raise money and do good. For every One World Futbol sold through a campaign, we give $5 U.S. back to the team, organization or individual* and donate a One World Futbol to an organization working with youth in disadvantaged communities.
*In order to earn the $5 U.S. per ball, the campaign must sell at least 20 One World Futbols.

Q: How long does it take to push a campaign live?

A: Once an application is submitted, we will review the campaign within 15 business days. If the application meets our specifications, the campaign can go live within 20 business days of submission. If the application is incomplete, it will take longer to push live.

Q: Where can I donate the One World Futbols generated through my campaign?

A: Donate to one of our partner organizations: if you would like One World Play Project to choose, we will distribute the One World Futbols generated through the campaign to an organization working with children and youth in disadvantaged communities.

Donate locally (in the contiguous U.S. or Europe): if you want to donate the One World Futbols to an organization in the contiguous U.S. or Europe, One World Play Project will cover the cost of shipping the donated One World Futbols to one address in the contiguous U.S. or Europe. You will be responsible for the logistics of delivery.

Donate internationally: if you want to donate the One World Futbols to an organization outside the contiguous U.S. or Europe, One World Play Project will cover the cost of shipping the donated One World Futbols to one address in the contiguous U.S. or Europe. From there, you will be responsible for the cost of international shipping and the logistics of delivery.

Q: What types of organizations can receive donated One World Futbols?

A: We donate One World Futbols to organizations, programs and volunteers around the world who bring the power of play to disadvantaged communities to inspire positive social change. The One World Futbols are meant to be a shared community resource; the balls should not be given as gifts to individuals. We do give the balls to religious organizations but not religious organizations that proselytize individuals. One World Futbols will be kept separate from proselytizing or political messaging, and the balls cannot be given or withheld based on religious belief and/or political affiliation. We encourage donating to schools and sports for development programs that work with youth in disadvantaged communities to foster social change.

Q: Can I opt to not keep the bounty?

A: Yes, you have a choice. If you choose to keep the bounty, your campaign page will only be accessible on our Campaigns page and via your unique URL. If you choose not to keep the bounty, your campaign will be included in the dropdown menu on our Products page in addition to being accessible on our Campaigns page and via your unique URL, giving your campaign increased exposure.

Q: How long can I run my campaign?

A: Once live, campaigns will run for three months. We will evaluate each campaign after three months. If a campaign is doing well and wants to continue, we’ll keep that campaign open. Of course, we make the final call.

Q: Can I receive a portion of my donated balls or campaign bounty before the campaign closes?

A: No. At the conclusion of the campaign, the donated balls will all be shipped at once and to one address (in the contiguous U.S. or Europe). The bounty check (if applicable) will get cut at the end of the campaign and sent to the designated financial contact.

Q: Can I keep track of who is donating to my campaign?

A: One World Play Project cannot share the contact information of those who have purchased One World Futbols through a campaign.

Q: Can I send a note to people who support my campaign?

A: We are not able to send a customized note on your behalf to people who support your campaign. We also regret that we cannot customize the shipping in any way.

Q: Can I sell One World Futbols at my tournament or event?

A: We cannot ship One World Futbols to be sold at physical events, tournaments and so on, but we can provide you with a PDF to print our brochure to share at events and tournaments. Email campaigns@oneworldplayproject.com to request materials.

Q: Can I get/make a banner or use your logo to promote my campaign at tournaments, events and other gatherings?

A: We do not have signage to loan for events/promotions, but you may create signage using the One World Play Project logo to fit your specifications/needs. We do require that our team reviews and approves all collateral that incorporates the One World Play Project logo. For use of our logo, email pr@oneworldplayproject.com. We’re excited that you want to share the One World Play Project mission and story!

Q: Can I do PR and social media around my campaign?

A: Yes. For all PR, coordinate with pr@oneworldplayproject.com. Follow us on Facebook, on Twitter and on Instagram. For all social media, work with social@oneworldplayproject.com.

Q: Can we embed video or our social media channels into our campaign pages?

A: Currently, there is no option to do this.

Q: Can we ensure a particular size One World Futbol is delivered to the recipient organization?

A: We typically send size 5 One World Futbols to recipient organizations. However, if needed and requested, we can send youth size 4 balls to organizations.

Q: Will I be able to select the color I want if I am hosting a campaign? Will the donated balls also be that same color?

A: Through your campaign, you can sell blue, green, pink and/or orange One World Futbols. For purchases made through the Buy One, Give One program, supporters can select the color they want for the “Buy One” side. All balls raised through the campaign for the recipient organization will be blue One World Futbols — e.g., the second ball triggered by the Buy One, Give One option as well as balls generated through the Give Balls option will all be blue.

Q: Can I do a campaign to raise One World Futbols for organizations that serve animals?

A: Currently, all campaign recipients must be organizations working with children and youth to create a positive change in our world.

Q: How do I start a campaign with One World Play Project?

A: It’s easy! Start by filling out the Campaign Application.
