How We’re Making a Difference
One World Futbols are needed because the surfaces that children play on in parts of South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique are very rough and harsh. Standard soccer balls get popped and become unusable very quickly, which prevents children from playing.
Friends of Mutale is running this campaign with One World Play Project to raise ultra-durable One World Futbols, soccer balls that never need a pump and never go flat, for World Parks, World Cup.
World Parks/World Cup endeavours to harness the power of sport, to instill in students the ability to think critically, to seek solutions to issues which are relevant to their communities, and to connect conservation and climate change awareness across cross-border communities in the Transfrontier Conservation Area of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park (GLTP).’
Friends of Mutale’s vision is about ‘Creating lasting development among communities in the Pafuri Node of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park through sport.’
Our outreach programme targets 30 primary schools between South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. We follow a sport for social development methodology developed by Coaches Across Continents, which is brought to the schools through our community coaches, who follow a self-directed learning philosophy by listening to the students, creating and adapting games, to target local social issues.
By connecting with schools around the Pafuri Node of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park for a sport for social development project, we want all the kids from these schools, who are split between 3 countries, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, to start on the same level, this means providing balls, cones, coloured bibs to them all.
‘We have seen over the course of 2 weeks 10 normal leather footballs destroyed due to the nature of the grounds the schools and kids use, in that same period we had 5 One World Futbols, donated by Coaches Across Continents, which have lasted and are still being used. The One World Futbols are amazing, they can be used on all types of surfaces with out the need for pumps or patches; kids and schools can use them throughout the year.’ Vince Mehers, Director, Friends of Mutale
One World Futbols will last much longer and will allow children to play as long as they want.
