U.S. Embassy Togo, Rotary International and One World Futbol Project to Distribute 5,460 Nearly Indestructible Soccer Balls throughout Togo

Lomé, Togo—April 10, 2014—The Embassy of the United States of America in Togo and Rotary International today announced they are working with One World Futbol Project to deliver 5,460 One World Futbols, sponsored by U.S. automobile manufacturer Chevrolet, to organizations working with youth in Togo including the Ministry of Sport, the United States Peace Corps, and the UK-based non-governmental organization Plan International.

The One World Futbols will be distributed in the five regions of Togo. The Ministry of Sport, Peace Corps, and Plan International will plan, organize, and execute health education and leadership and empowerment programs for youth throughout the country. The Peace Corps’ will implement Malaria education programs in secondary schools in celebration of World Malaria Day. Plan Togo will implement girl’s education and empowerment activities via Plan Togo’s Because I am a Girl campaign. The Ministry of Sport will collaborate with the Ministry of Education in the implementation of programs involving the distribution of the balls in academic institutions. The distribution of One World Futbols throughout Togo was made possible by the support of Rotary International.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Robert Whitehead congratulated the beneficiary organizations and expressed the support of the Department of State to One World Futbol Project. Mr. Whitehead stated: “Sports Diplomacy has emerged as an integral part of efforts to build ever-strengthening relations between the United States and other nations as it uses the universal passion for sports as a way to transcend language and cultural differences and bring people together.” He added: “Participation in sports teaches leadership, teamwork, and communication skills that help young people succeed in all areas of their lives” and expressed his hope to see kids of Togo playing with One World Futbols in all cities.

One World Futbol Project brings the healing power of play to youth worldwide by making, selling and distributing the One World Futbol, a nearly indestructible ball that never needs a pump, never goes flat, and is designed to survive the harshest environments. Collaborating with sponsors, organizations and individuals, One World Futbol Project delivers balls to disadvantaged communities where play and sport are used to foster social change.

In May 2012, Chevrolet became the founding sponsor of One World Futbol Project, pledging to support the donation and distribution of 1.5 million Chevrolet-branded One World Futbols worldwide over three years. The balls are used in programs that provide education, teach essential life skills and encourage conflict resolution to youth living in disadvantaged areas.

To date, the One World Futbol has reached more than 165 countries through their growing global network of organizations bringing the healing power of play to an estimated 24 million youth worldwide.
