Promoting peace through play with durable soccer balls in Mexico

In Monterrey, Mexico, our Make Life PlayFull partner Futbol por la Paz is providing children opportunities and resources to play and find peace through play. To date, the nonprofit organization has donated more than 300 One World Futbols, ultra-durable soccer balls, in five Mexican states—and they’re just getting started.

Futbol por la Paz realizes soccer can be a powerful tool for teaching peace and conflict resolution among youth, especially those in youth detention centers. In fact, Eugenio Monroy and Isaac Trevino Gutierrez of Futbol por la Paz recently donated a bunch of ultra-durable soccer balls to one particular center in Monterrey.

While there, they met Mario, a young man serving a 4½-year sentence for kidnapping on behalf of a gang. Mario shared his story with us, reflecting on how soccer is helping him find happiness and hope and how he plans to be a better person for his family, especially his daughter. In the center, Mario is finding peace through play, little by little.
