The Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative (WPDI) helps societies affected by conflict transform into safer and more productive communities. It was founded in 2012 by humanitarian, artist and UNESCO Special Envoy for Peace and Reconciliation Forest Whitaker.
WPDI programs provide young people and their communities with the tools necessary to create lasting peace in their environment. In 2014, WPDI launched the Peace through Sports Initiative as part of its Youth Peacemaker Network. The Peace through Sports Initiative supports youth in IDP and refugee camps in South Sudan and Uganda.
WPDI believes the practice of sports is an opportunity to teach children and young people values and attitudes of peace and non-violence. Through sports like soccer, basketball and volleyball, young people can be sensitized to peace-conducive behaviors. Drawing on sports as a social unifier and rule-based activity, the program includes games and group discussions to foster the dissemination of a culture of peace.
